A few weeks ago I was driving with my sons, and we drove by our old house were they grew up. My youngest said he remembers the inside of the house, but memoeries are fading away. He told me he would someday return and ask the new owners to let him in for a while. A few days later he showed me this song from Miranda Lambert, and memories came back to me too.

The House That Built Me” is a song written by Tom Douglas and Allen Shamblin, and recorded by American country music artist Miranda Lambert. Blake Shelton was originally set to record the song when Lambert heard it, she immediately wanted to record it for herself. It was released in March 2010 as the third single from her third studio album, Revolution. It is the fastest-rising single of her career, reaching the Top 20 in its eighth week. For the chart week of June 12, 2010, the song became Lambert’s first Number One hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, and held its place at the top for four consecutive weeks. Additionally, it was her second single to receive a platinum certification from the RIAA on January 31, 2011.[1]

Lambert performed the song during the 2010 Academy of Country Music Awards on April 18, 2010, and received a standing ovation. At the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards on February 13, 2011, she won a Grammy for Best Female Country Vocal Performance for “The House That Built Me.”

I hope you enjoy it.

THE HOUSE THAT BUILT ME

I know they say, you can’t go home again
Well, I just had to come back one last time
And Ma’am, I know, you don’t know me from Adam
But these hand prints on the front steps are mine

Up those stairs, in that little back bedroom
Is where I did my homework and I learned to play guitar
And I bet you didn’t know under that live oak
My favorite dog is buried in the yard

I thought if I could touch this place or feel it
This brokenness inside me might start healing
Out here it’s like I’m someone else
I thought that maybe I could find myself

If I could just come in, I swear I’ll leave
Won’t take nothing but a memory
From the house that built me

Mama cut out pictures of houses for years
From “Better Homes and Garden” magazine
Plans were drawn and concrete poured
And nail by nail and board by board
Daddy gave life to mama’s dream

I thought if I could touch this place or feel it
This brokenness inside me might start healing
Out here it’s like I’m someone else
I thought that maybe I could find myself

If I could just come in, I swear I’ll leave
Won’t take nothing but a memory
From the house that built me

You leave home, you move on
And you do the best you can
I got lost in this whole world
And forgot who I am

I thought if I could touch this place or feel it
This brokenness inside me might start healing
Out here it’s like I’m someone else
I thought that maybe I could find myself

If I could walk around, I swear I’ll leave
Holding nothing but a memory
From the house that built me

lifehouse

It was my son who first introduced me to the band Lifehouse. They are an American rock band from Los Angeles comprising Jason Wade (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Rick Woolstenhulme, Jr. (drums, percussion), Bryce Soderberg (bass guitar, back-up vocals) and Ben Carey (lead guitar).

The band came to mainstream prominence in 2001 with the hit single “Hanging by a Moment” from their debut studio album, No Name Face.[1][2] The song was #1 for three weeks on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart and peaked at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, and the single won a Billboard Music Award for Hot 100 Single of the Year, having spent twenty weeks in the top 10 and more than a year on the charts.[3][4]

In 2002, Lifehouse released their follow-up album Stanley Climbfall. Since then, they have released four more albums: the eponymous Lifehouse in 2005, Who We Are in 2007, Smoke and Mirrors in 2010, and Almería in 2012. These albums have spawned the singles “You and Me“, “First Time“, and “Whatever It Takes“, which have all been top 40 hits in the US.[citation needed]

To date, Lifehouse has sold over 15 million singles and albums worldwide, approximately 5 million of which are albums.

EVERYTHING

Find me here,
And speak to me.
I want to feel you,
I need to hear you.
You are the light,
That’s leading me,
To the place,
Where I find peace again.

You are the strength,
That keeps me walking.
You are the hope,
That keeps me trusting.
You are the light,
To my soul.
You are my purpose,
You’re everything.

How can I stand here with you,
And not be moved by you?
Would you tell me,
How could it be,
Any better than this?

You calm the storms,
And you give me rest.
You hold me in your hands,
You won’t let me fall.
You steal my heart,
And you take my breath away.
Would you take me in,
Take me deeper now.

And how can I stand here with you,
And not be moved by you?
Would you tell me,
How could it be,
Any better than this?

And how can I stand here with you,
And not be moved by you?
Would you tell me,
How could it be,
Any better than this?

Cause you’re all I want,
You’re all I need,
You’re everything, everything.

You’re all I want,
You’re all I need,
You’re everything, everything.

You’re all I want,
You’re all I need,
You’re everything, everything.

You’re all I want,
You’re all I need,
You’re everything, everything.

And how can I stand here with you,
And not be moved by you?
Would you tell me,
How could it be,
Any better than this?

And how can I stand here with you,
And not be moved by you?
Would you tell me,
How could it be,
Any better, any better than this?

And how can I stand here with you,
And not be moved by you
Would you tell me,
How could it be,
Any better than this?

Would you tell me,
How could it be,
Any better than this…
